I Wanna Grow Old with You by Me from Superawesome

i was just looking through some old files on my computer…and remembered that i totally recorded a cover of adam sandler’s grow old with you (you know, the song from the wedding singer) back on valentine’s day, 2006. i also recorded a sequel. you don’t get to hear that one.
romance will never die, as long as boys will still sing girls songs from late-90s romantic comedies…amiright?
(the ones you love) - a valentine’s day afterglow/hangover mix
this is basically the songs i’ve posted over the last few days, plus a couple extra songs about love and the lack of it (including a katy perry cover, ryan gosling covering the mills brothers, and a song about mermaids).
1) ryan gosling - you always hurt the ones you love (mills brothers cover)
2) helene smith - i am controlled by your love
3) man man - van helsing boombox
4) weed and foxes in fiction - teenage dream (katy perry cover)
5) cloud cult - chemicals collide
6) maria taylor - song beneath the song
7) ben walker radio - angel
8) pink nasty - don’t ever change (feat. will oldham)
9) phosphorescent - the mermaid parade
10) damien jurado - i am still here
11) mazzy star - fade into you
12) sharon van etten - love more
13) sparklehorse with the flaming lips - go (daniel johnston cover)
14) shelley duvall - he needs me (jon brion edition)
enjoy. and don’t forget to buy all the half-price valentine’s candy you can eat. oh, and i took that picture back in the early fall (rollei prego 90).
Shelley Duvall - He Needs Me by Jon Brion from Punch-Drunk Love

shelley duvall - he needs me (jon brion / punch-drunk love edition)
valentine’s day overglow…thanks to mckenna for reminding me how perfect this song is.

sparklehorse with the flaming lips - go (daniel johnston cover)
valentine’s day countdown, pt. 6: daniel johnston might be the single most heartbreaking figure in the world, and that’s not (entirely) hyperbole. add sparklehorse for some extra heartbreak (as if you needed it), and you’ve got a surefire valentine’s day winner.
(for real though, it’s a hopeful song).
Chemicals Collide by Cloud Cult from The Meaning of 8

cloud cult - chemicals collide
valentine’s day countdown, pt 5: keeping the dorky train rolling.
the first time i heard cloud cult was in neal’s car, en route to a goodwill where we accidentally met marilyn-manson’s-then-bassist’s-dad by a rack of debranded ben sherman felt pants…poor guy was crying about unicorns and dead children, all heartbreaking and horrible.
things are looking up though, right?
Angel by ben walker radio from better places to go

ben walker radio - angel
valentine’s day countdown, pt 4. this song is dorky and i loved it 8 years ago and i love it today and i will love it tomorrow and always and forever. plus 12 points for gang vocals. plus another 12 for a chorus that randomly shows up in my head all. the. time.
Van Helsing Boombox by Man Man from Six Demon Bag

man man - van helsing boombox
valentine’s day countdown, pt 3: this counts as a love song, right?
“i wanna sleep for weeks
like a dog at her feet
even though i know it won’t work out in the long run”
(right)
Don't Ever Change by Pink Nasty from Mold The Gold

pink nasty - don’t ever change
valentine’s day countdown, pt 2. this song is weird and perfect. i mean, it’s pink nasty and will oldham singing a duet about deodorant stains and love…what’s not to like?
“please don’t wear any makeup
please baby won’t you shut the fuck up?
(‘cause you know that i love you)”
‘nuff said.
I Am Controlled By Your Love by Helene Smith from Eccentric Soul: The Deep City Label

helene smith - i am controlled by your love
valentine’s day is coming up soon. monday? monday. since 80% of awesome songs are love songs, i’m going to do a countdown (or something like it). these aren’t in any order…they’re just awesome songs about love that happen to pop into my head. i thought about starting this yesterday, but i had noggin toboggan in my head all day (you’re welcome).
about this song: it’s awesome. deep city was a 60s-era miami soul label that only put out one lp (helene smith sings sweet soul), BUT a lot of amazing tracks have been collected on two eccentric soul compilations (1,2). check those out. and if you’re not convinced, just take a listen to “am i a good man?” (the original is better than the band of horses cover, i promise).
these will all be dedicated to henry.
