the times when i have no time to waste are the times when i waste time the most.
so today, in the midst of writing my past-due dissertation, i made a mix.  because apparently every time i have a stupid idea in the shower, i just run with it.
and here it is: all of the songs start with numbers, and none of the numbers can be spelled out (they actually have to be numerals).  i think it turned out reasonably well, considering.
you can click here to listen (it’s an 8tracks link so all of the stuff is gonna be out of order after the first listen…but it’s better than nothing; and you can download using the link below if it doesn’t disappear too soon).
track listing:
1. doves - 10:03 2. phantom planet - 1st things 1st 3. broken social scene - 7/4 (shoreline) 4. foals - 2 trees 5. kevin devine - 11-17 6. grandaddy - 12-pak-599 7. starflyer 59 - 20 dollar bills 8. discover america - 1986 9. colour revolt - 8 years (live at daytrotter) 10. azure ray - 4th of july 11. denison witmer - 24 turned 25 12. baby baby - $20 13. pinback - 3X0 14. modest mouse - 3rd planet 15. el obo - 2night 16. elliott smith - 2:45 am 17. alexi murdoch - 12

…and remember: 20 dollar bills will never change your life.

li’l bear | fall 2012 (the end)
a new mix!  this one is kindof weird because i started it yesterday morning when it was cold and rainy, then finished it last night when it was hot and humid.  in any event, i fear that summer is ending.  and quickly.
tracks: robby owen hale - front porch song one (live on a front porch) black rebel motorcycle club - devil’s waitin’ brave baby - days of our youth desert noises - highway cars peter wolf crier - beach colour revolt - 8 years (live at daytrotter) damien jurado - nothing is the news (demo version) des ark - some are love shovels and rope - kitchen hallway (live at daytrotter) rejectioneers - buried treasure (intermission) starflyer 59 - just try right away, great captain - i wait for you all get out - bring it home toro y moi - miss ya the can’t kids - gimme a grab clues - you have my eyes now marry a thief - old enough the strokes - i’ll try anything once those lavender whales - family trees share their leaves eels - things the grandchildren should know
i didn’t realize it at the time, but there’s a pretty solid southern influence here…12/20, by my count (robby owen hale, brave baby, colour revolt, des ark, shovels and rope, rejectioneers, right away great captain, all get out, toro y moi, the can’t kids, marry a thief, and those lavender whales).  probably because we make the best music.
click here or on the picture to download.  and make sure to sort by “album by artist.”
enjoy?  enjoy!

starflyer 59 - a holiday song (happy holidays)

maybe this’ll be a holiday song christmas countdown?  this was the first starflyer 59 song i ever heard, and i’m pretty sure it actually changed my life.  i was 12 years old, heard this song (probably on a 7-ball sampler?), then asked my parents for sf59’s americana, damien jurado’s waters ave s, and pedro the lion’s it’s hard to find a friend for christmas.  like good parents, they got me exactly what i wanted.  and, like a good person, i stopped listening to so much dc talk.

starflyer 59 - a holiday song (happy holidays)

listen to this song.  please.

i’m working on a winter mix, and this song isn’t gonna make the cut.  not because it isn’t a great song (it is), but because it’s more of an “it’s cold” mix than a “happy holidays, i think” mix.  so this is it.  this is all you get.

this was the first starflyer 59 song i ever heard.  it was on a 7ball sampler in…1998?  anyway, it changed my life a li’l bit.  right after that i bought americana and the fashion focus and everything got awesome.

dream journal, 09/01/10

i drive my friend to the airport, who isn’t my friend but is.  when we arrive, he takes the car with him.  wandering unnoticed through unfamiliar basketball games, i come across a black limousine filled with laughing people, every window exploding with colors as they shoot roman candles into the afternoon.  only when the blood begins to soak through my shirt do i realize that they aren’t fireworks, but gunshots.

self-interpretation:
-“what if real life is like what ifs?”
-“no but it’s not though, nothing’s actually what ifs.”
-and that is why we never fall in love again.
-dream rebound

(my dreams are still stuck in 1999 - reading and rereading the perks of being a wallflower, listening to too much starflyer)

eirtee #20: starflyer 59 - “fell in love at 22”

(connection: THAT show, holy triumvirate)

when i was 12 or so, i got three albums that changed my life: pedro the lion’s “it’s hard to find a friend,” damien jurado’s “waters ave s,” and starflyer 59’s “americana.”

“americana” was heavy, wall-of-sound shoegaze, and it was amazing.  then a year later, they put out “the fashion focus” and everything changed - it sounded just as forlorn, but now it was…pretty.

anyway, this song is from “the fashion focus.”  if you really listen to the lyrics, jason martin (the only constant member of starflyer 59) does this thing that he does a lot - he leaves you guessing.  i can never tell if what he’s singing about is good or bad…it just is.  it’s pretty and it’s sad and i love it…but i also understand why, on a 800-miles-in-one-day-with-no-ac-in-the-summer trip, this girl i used to hold hands with would skip it every time it came up on the roadtrip mix.

oh, and “the wonder years” was/is a great show.
