the times when i have no time to waste are the times when i waste time the most.
so today, in the midst of writing my past-due dissertation, i made a mix.  because apparently every time i have a stupid idea in the shower, i just run with it.
and here it is: all of the songs start with numbers, and none of the numbers can be spelled out (they actually have to be numerals).  i think it turned out reasonably well, considering.
you can click here to listen (it’s an 8tracks link so all of the stuff is gonna be out of order after the first listen…but it’s better than nothing; and you can download using the link below if it doesn’t disappear too soon).
track listing:
1. doves - 10:03 2. phantom planet - 1st things 1st 3. broken social scene - 7/4 (shoreline) 4. foals - 2 trees 5. kevin devine - 11-17 6. grandaddy - 12-pak-599 7. starflyer 59 - 20 dollar bills 8. discover america - 1986 9. colour revolt - 8 years (live at daytrotter) 10. azure ray - 4th of july 11. denison witmer - 24 turned 25 12. baby baby - $20 13. pinback - 3X0 14. modest mouse - 3rd planet 15. el obo - 2night 16. elliott smith - 2:45 am 17. alexi murdoch - 12
click here or on the picture to download.
…and remember: 20 dollar bills will never change your life.

li’l bear | fall 2012 (the end)
a new mix!  this one is kindof weird because i started it yesterday morning when it was cold and rainy, then finished it last night when it was hot and humid.  in any event, i fear that summer is ending.  and quickly.
tracks: robby owen hale - front porch song one (live on a front porch) black rebel motorcycle club - devil’s waitin’ brave baby - days of our youth desert noises - highway cars peter wolf crier - beach colour revolt - 8 years (live at daytrotter) damien jurado - nothing is the news (demo version) des ark - some are love shovels and rope - kitchen hallway (live at daytrotter) rejectioneers - buried treasure (intermission) starflyer 59 - just try right away, great captain - i wait for you all get out - bring it home toro y moi - miss ya the can’t kids - gimme a grab clues - you have my eyes now marry a thief - old enough the strokes - i’ll try anything once those lavender whales - family trees share their leaves eels - things the grandchildren should know
i didn’t realize it at the time, but there’s a pretty solid southern influence here…12/20, by my count (robby owen hale, brave baby, colour revolt, des ark, shovels and rope, rejectioneers, right away great captain, all get out, toro y moi, the can’t kids, marry a thief, and those lavender whales).  probably because we make the best music.
click here or on the picture to download.  and make sure to sort by “album by artist.”
enjoy?  enjoy!

ohmygodohmygodohmygod.
colour revolt is releasing their first ep on clear vinyl, limited run of 1,000.  it also comes with a digital download of this ep, the “makeshift” ep (2005), and a remix version of a new family.
i know it’s tacky to buy yourself stuff for christmas.  maybe even tackier when it won’t be released until february.  but guess what?  i do what i want.
go buy this (but wait a few second so i can finish my order first).
ALSO, i’m seeeeeriously considering flying home for the new brookland tavern show (in their words: “In celebration of this momentous occasion, we will be playing a select number of shows in some of the towns we first started playing all those years ago. At these shows, we will play the EP from start to finish (plus some other songs)”).
also also, go watch this video i took of them playing blood in your mouth last time they were in boston (if you’re bored and/or like awesome things).

colour revolt - blood in your mouth

i’m pretty sure the first time i saw these guys was at new brookland tavern on one of the hottest days ever of all time ever.  they killed it, and they’ve been killing it ever since. (…and also before then, i just didn’t know about it).

in ben walker’s scenesc interview with jesse, he talks about columbia being a sort of home away from home (and part of the inspiration for a new family).  my heart grew twelveteen sizes when i heard that. (god save the south).

(i took a bunch of videos, but probably won’t get around to putting up any more any time soon…not because they’re not awesome (they are), but because i should probably spend more time “working” and/or “sleeping”).

colour revolt - “moses of the south”

what did you do last night?  unless you were one of the hundred or so people at the middle east upstairs, you were making a mistake.  colour revolt absolutely killed it - thank god they still exist.

the set was almost entirely from the cradle and the first ep, with only “moses of the south” and “naked and red” from plunder beg and curse.  and both of those were part of the (unplanned?) encore.

speaking of naked and red…

(remember to breathe, okay?)

also…

new stuff:
Our Names (first song of the night)
8 Years (oh, you like ugly?)
Brought to Life (oh, you like beauty?)

old stuff:
Our Homes Are Graves (true story)
A New Family (cheers man, thanks)

li’l bear/cloud atlas mix 1 - we’re all gonna die (but don’t give up)
cloud atlas is a book - but it’s also a gobstopper, a nesting doll, and a fish wrapped in newspaper.  each narrative is told in two pieces, tiering towards the center.  and this mix is like that - this mix is tellings and retellings building towards each other, with death and hope nestled in the middle.
…maybe the track listing will help this make sense:
1) daniel johnston - true love will find you in the end2) castanets - you are the blood3) grizzly bear - shift4) the beatles - tomorrow never knows5) nick drake - cello song6) the postal service - we will become silhouettes7) scout niblett - your beat kicks back like death8) beach house - master of none9) japandroids - wet hair10) neil young - heart of gold11) radiohead - packt like sardines in a crushd tin box12) colour revolt - mattresses underwater13) david bazan - packt like sardines (live in beverly)14) birds and batteries - heart of gold15) teen daze - wet hair16) toro y moi - master of none17) jens lekman - your beat kicks back like death18) the shins - we will become silhouettes19) jose gonzalez and the books - cello song20) secret colours - tomorrow never knows21) levek - shift (a capella)22) sufjan stevens - you are the blood23) basia bulat - true love will find you in the end (live at daytrotter)
…do you see it?  do you?  each song is reflected on either half of the center - originals are in the first half, and covers are in the second.  tellings and retellings.  fish and newspapers.
i tried to do a few things with this mix.  i tried to keep with the themes of the book: death, and rebirth, and occasional hope (of course love snuck in there, as it does into everything).  i tried to choose covers that stand as their own songs.  i tried to make it flow well on both sides.  i tried to make the central song a true axis (but may have been blinded by my love of colour revolt).  most of all, i tried to make it something i would listen to on purpose.
so…i hope you like it.  if nothing else, it was fun to make.  and i would love for people to actually listen to it - so pass it around, reblog it, email it to your friends, press it into vinyl for your parents, or do whatever else you want (if you think it deserves it).
(part 2 coming next week…and i promise it’s more fun, less desperate)

colour revolt - “blood in your mouth”

colour revolt’s first (and only) ep might seriously be my favorite of all time.  seriously.

it’s beautiful and ugly all at once - this perfect mix of dust and blues and the haunted remnants of religion.  and when jesse gets on stage he becomes the most unlikely of prophets - slack-jawed and glassy-eyed, yelping and cooing, channeling something and everything.

they’re coming to mid east up in september…and i’m buying a calendar just so i can put this on it.

(andy hull covers this song, too - so there’s the connection to yesterday’s video.  that and the shivery-spine-factor.)
